Three Tour Guides from The Real Mary King’s Close supported the initiative organised by The Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (ECHC). This is the only charity in the country solely dedicated to supporting NHS Lothian children’s services.
During the event, the guides conducted a workshop on life in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Dressed as former residents of Edinburgh – Patrick Byrne, Janet Chesney, and Mary King herself. The day encompassed a performance in the hospital’s social area, followed by personal interactions with children in the medical wards who couldn’t attend.
To ensure an equally memorable experience, the team recreated Old Town Edinburgh by the children’s bedsides, using props, improvisation, and storytelling to bring the 17th century to life.
Paul Nixon, General Manager at The Real Mary King’s Close, says:
“The amazing work undertaken by The Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity is so important to ensuring the children at the Royal Hospital have the opportunity to enjoy interactive learning activities. We are passionate about creating unforgettable experiences. It’s a delight to give the children a chance to learn about Edinburgh’s rich history”.
The Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity runs a six-day-per-week programme of arts and activities for the young people. By transforming the hospital wards into art galleries, fairylands, and past eras, they ensure that every child has the freedom to explore through creative play.
